Objective Setting
People are your most expensive resource. If you have recruited the right people they will be motivated and want to contribute to the achievement of your organisation’s aims and objectives. But, how often have you been frustrated by the apparent lack of ability of staff to do what they have been asked to do? Could this be because they have not been given a clear brief in the first place? Let’s be honest, as managers we are all busy people and we sometimes take for granted our team’s ability to translate that hurried briefing into the outcome we expect. Perhaps if we took the time to analyse what it is we want to achieve, and then establish clear instructions and briefings based on focused and valid objectives, we would save considerable time, money and, of course, frustration. This workshop explores the process of creating objectives, covering a range of scenarios within the workplace, including briefing and tasking, performance and development.
Aim:
To explore the process of objective setting, from analysis of requirements to crafting of objectives that will provide clarity of purpose and guarantee expected outcome.
Objectives:
At the end of the workshop delegates will be able to:
- Apply various business planning tools for analysing the requirements around which objectives are to be set, including mind mapping, force field analysis, SWOT and PESTLE
- Create a briefing based on clearly identified priorities
- Craft meaningful objectives based on the principle of SMART – Specific – Measurable – Achievable – Realistic - Timebound
- Identify various methods of gaining buy in and commitment to the achievement of objectives
- State the common pitfalls in objective setting
